The main target of the Danish Environmental Cooperation Programme in Malaysia is to secure the incorporation of the environmental dimension in the on-going and future policy and strategy development. The Malaysia Development Plans and the strategic priorities in relation to Environmental Management establish the overall framework for the Danish support. As a result of Malaysia’s successful progress in terms of economic development and increased domestic economic resources, the Danish Government has decided to phase out the support to the environmental sector in Malaysia over a five-year period from 2002. To facilitate and secure the sustainability of the past Danish support, an Environmental Cooperation Programme for 2003-2006 between Denmark and Malaysia has been developed (the entire programme document can be downloaded here). The main objective of the Danish programme is to strengthen relevant Malaysian ministries in their capacity to take into consideration environmental concerns in the national development planning – and thereby support the ability to ensure the sustainable development of Malaysia. The main support will be provided on the government-to-government level supported by two additional facilities in order to involve the NGOs and the private sectors in the development process. Furthermore Denmark and Malaysia have signed an agreement to facilitate the cooperation on climate change initiatives, which include financial support from the Danish Embassy to the development of CDM projects.
